I know there is hidden motivation to people's actions because I can see it in their behavior. When I think of a situation and have an interpretation based on what I sense from it, I can read people, and I can connect realizations with seemingly unrelated thoughts and understand what is happening behind the scenes.

Potential Psychological Explanations

  • Empathy: Your ability to "read people" might be rooted in high emotional intelligence or empathy. Empathetic individuals can often pick up on subtle cues in others' behavior, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
  • Pattern Recognition: Your skill at connecting seemingly unrelated thoughts could be a result of your brain's ability to identify patterns and make connections. This is a common cognitive function that helps us understand complex situations.
  • Intuition: Sometimes, our subconscious mind can process information faster than our conscious mind. This can lead to "intuitive" insights or feelings about a situation.
  • Observational Skills: Your ability to "see hidden motivations" might simply be a result of keen observation. By paying close attention to people's behavior and context, you can often infer their underlying intentions.

Parapsychological Perspectives

While psychology offers these explanations, some parapsychologists might suggest that your abilities could be related to:

  • Intuition: This term is often used in parapsychology to describe a form of extrasensory perception (ESP) that allows individuals to gain knowledge or information without using the senses.
  • Clairvoyance: This refers to the ability to perceive information or events that are not physically apparent.

Tummo

Studies on Tibetan monks and a Western control group have demonstrated the effect of increased thermal power output using the forceful breath technique that depends in part on meditative visualization.

In a 1982 study by Benson et al. three monks, who were practitioners of tummo yoga, were researched. All three monks had been practicing tummo for six years on a daily basis. On top of that, they lived in barely insulated, unheated stone sheds. Their skin temperature was measured at different points, namely, around the navel, the lower back, the chest, the left forearm, the left fifth finger nail bed, and lastly, the forehead. In the first monk a temperature increase of 5.9°C was registered in his finger during a 55-minute tummo practice; the toe temperature increased by 7°C; the air temperature went up from 22°C to 23.5°C. Finger temperature in the second monk increased by 7.2°C, the toe temperature increased by 4.0°C; the air temperature increased from 16°C to 19.2°C. In the third monk a temperature increase of 3.15°C was registered in his finger; toe temperature increased by 8.3°C; the room temperature decreased from 20°C to 18.5°C but then increased again to 19.5°C. These results showcase that the practice of tummo yoga can lead to large increases in toe and finger temperature.

In a 2002 experiment reported by the Harvard Gazette, conducted in Normandy, France, two monks from the Buddhist tradition wore sensors that recorded changes in heat production and metabolism. However, this study has not been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and has been criticized by peers: "The visual effect of steaming sheets reported by eye-witnesses of the g-tummo ceremony cannot be taken as evidence of elevated body temperature. Wet sheets wrapped around a practitioner's body would steam and dry due to the significant temperature difference between the wet sheets (heated by a human body) and the cold air outside, even if the practitioners simply maintain their normal body temperature."

A 2013 study by Kozhevnikov and colleagues showed increases in core body temperature in both expert meditators from eastern Tibet and Western non-meditators. The expert meditators using tummo visualization and exercises were able to increase body temperature the most. This study researched the effects of tummo combined with the visualization practice that accompanies the traditional technique compared with tummo yoga in which the breathing technique alone is implicated. The participants in the traditional tummo-practicing group were expert meditators from a monastery in eastern Tibet. The participants in the breathing technique-only group were from a Western background and did not have experience like the traditional group. However the Western group did have experience with several other forms of yoga. For the traditional tummo-practicing group the years of experience ranged from 6 to 32 years. EEG activity, left fifth finger temperature, and core body temperature were measured in 4 different conditions for the traditional practice group. The conditions were 1) baseline forceful breathing, where participants were asked to breathe and perform in the way in which they would normally during forceful breathing, but without the visualization, 2) Baseline gentle breathing, where participants performed gentle breathing as usual, but without the visualization, 3) meditation forceful breathing, where participants performed forceful breathing along with the visualization practice, and 4) meditation gentle breathing, where the participants practiced gentle breathing along with the visualization practice.

The participants in the Western group received extensive instruction in the techniques involved in the performance of the different forms of breathing used in the practice of tummo, after which all the participants in the Western group practiced these tummo techniques for about 45–60 minutes, during which time their temperatures were measured. In the traditional condition rises in temperature varying from 1.2°C to 6.8°C were observed. It was also discovered that when those in the traditional condition also applied their visualisation techniques, the rise in temperature could be sustained for a longer period of time. In those in the Western condition temperatures rose to the same degree as that observed in those in the traditional condition. These findings reveal that, when tummo is practiced in the right form, both experienced and newly-trained practitioners are able to raise their body temperature. When, in addition, visualisation methods are implemented, this rise in temperature can be maintained for a longer period of time.

Nen (念ネン or ネン—lit. "Sense"; "Mind Force" in the Viz translation) is one of the defining features of the Hunter × Hunter manga by Yoshihiro Togashi. It's a technique that allows a living being to use and manipulate their own life energy (known as aura); the term "Nen" can also be used in conversation to refer to aura. A person capable of utilizing Nen is colloquially referred to as a "Nen user" (能のう力りょく者しゃ, nōryokusha—lit. "ability person"), while those who cannot go by the designation "non-users" (一いっ般ぱん人じん, ippanjin—lit. "ordinary person").

Because one can craft a great variety of parapsychological abilities through Nen, it is considered a dangerous power that is kept hidden from the public at large to maintain balance in society.

Dual Affinities

A person can have only one Nen affinity; however, some Nen users may lean on one side of their spot on the Nen category chart towards another, adjacent affinity. These Nen users can master that adjacent affinity more efficiently than normal because of this. Certain Nen users are directly in the middle between two affinities, giving them a dual affinity. This means that the Nen user is capable of mastering that second Nen affinity at the same speed they would their natural affinity. However, that Nen user would still have one Nen type as their primary affinity and the level and efficiency of the second affinity is still regulated by rules of the Nen category chart.

Hisoka's Personality Test (modified)

Aura-based Personality Analysis is a Nen-type identification method invented by Hisoka by which he claims that he can judge a person's Nen-type based on their personality. According to him, all people of one aura type are generally of the same personality type. By his own admission, however, this method is no more reliable than trying to discover someone's zodiac sign or blood type from just a personality analysis. According to his theory (modified):

Enhancers are modest and may underestimate themselves they are also sensitive, caring, and compassionate. Most of them never lie, hide nothing, imaginative idealists, guided by their own core values and beliefs. To them, possibilities are paramount; the realism of the moment is only of passing concern. They see potential for a better future, and pursue truth and meaning with their own individual flair. They are tuned into the needs of others and acutely aware of human suffering. They enjoy spending time exploring their own ideas and values. They are highly attuned to their emotional environment and attentive to both the feelings of others and the perception others have of them. This is reflected in their Nen as Enhancers typically rely on simple and uncomplicated Nen abilities.

Transmuters are complex people, they may be reluctant to engage with others who might not understand or appreciate them, and can thus be hard to get to know; many are quiet, intelligent, serious, gentle, and possibly a bit reclusive. When they sense that their values are not being respected, or when their intuition tells them that someone’s intentions are not pure, they are likely to withdraw. They are oriented to relationships, but can be reserved with new people. They rarely disclose personal information quickly. Many Transmuters rely on techniques that give unique and unpredictable properties to their Nen that reflect their personalities.

Emitters enjoy challenging others, in the end they are usually happy to live and let live. They are rarely judgmental, but they may have little patience for people who can't keep up. They bring a sense of dynamic energy to their interactions with others and the world around them. They love to talk about people: not just the facts, but what motivates them, what inspires them, and what they envision achieving in life. They’ll often share their own aspirations freely, and want to hear others’ in return. They are typically warm and talkative and have a contagious enthusiasm for life. They like to be in the middle of the action and the center of attention. Because of the nature of Emission, many Nen abilities created by Emitters are primarily long range.

Conjurers are typically reserved and serious, and seem to spend a lot of time thinking. They are curious about the world around them and often want to know the principle behind what they see.. They have a serious, conservative air about them. They want to know and follow the rules of the game, and typically seek out predictable surroundings where they understand their role. Being able to thoroughly examine the information they receive is the strength of Conjurers. Many of the items that Conjurers create are often used by them deliberately, practically, and logically.

Manipulators are typically precise in their speech, and communicate complex ideas with carefully chosen words. They want to establish the ground rules and make sure everyone does what they’re supposed to. They typically connect with others through sharing ritual and routine., they are selective about their relationships, and appreciate others who allow them plenty of freedom to do their own thing.

They are analytical and objective, and like bringing order to the world around them. When there are flaws in a system, and they see them, and enjoys the process of discovering and implementing a better way. They are assertive and enjoy taking charge; While Manipulators often use techniques that allow them to control their opponents, some choose an inanimate medium to control.

Specialists are independent and charismatic. They won't say anything important about themselves and will refrain from making close friends. However, because of their natural charisma that attracts others, they are always surrounded by many people.

Specialization differs from the other Nen types; you can either use it or you can't. It cannot be partially used, so only Specialists can use it. It is possible for one to become a Specialist later in life. However, it is more likely for its adjacent categories, Manipulators or Conjurers, which is why this category is placed at the bottom of the Nen chart.

Alternative to John Beebe's 8 functions model

In Beebe’s model, the primary and shadow functions are presented as distinct and separate categories that operate in different ways within the individual’s psyche. This lack of a direct link between the primary and shadow functions allows for a more segmented analysis of how these functions manifest and influence behavior, often invoking contrasting or complementary dynamics that may not necessarily be explicitly connected in the model.

By maintaining this separation between the primary and shadow functions without a specified link, Beebe’s model encourages a focused examination of each set of functions independently, highlighting their unique roles and contributions to the individual’s cognitive functioning and personality development. This structured approach allows individuals to explore and understand the diverse aspects of their cognitive processes and behaviors without the need for an explicit functional linkage between the primary and shadow functions.

Alternative model (Each pair of types consists of 8 cognitive functions. The first half represents the primary type, while the second half represents the shadow type. In each pair, two functions appear twice creating a bridge between the two types, and the other four functions in both halves are a mix of introverted and extraverted forms of the same functions.)

Advantages of the Alternative model:

The alternative model which includes repeated functions serving as a linkage between primary and shadow functions, offers a unique and integrated approach to understanding cognitive function dynamics within personality types. Here is a summary of why this model's emphasis on repeated functions can be considered to provide a strong foundation compared to John Beebe's classic eight-function model:

1.Enhanced Interconnection:

By incorporating repeated functions in the alternative model, there is a clearer emphasis on the interplay and relationship between these functions.

This linkage can provide a more comprehensive and interconnected view of how cognitive functions interact and influence each other within the individual's psyche.

2. Deeper Insight: The inclusion of repeated functions adds depth to the analysis of cognitive processes, offering insights into how specific functions work together and impact various aspects of the individual's personality and behavior. This can lead to a more nuanced understanding of the individual's cognitive function stack.

3. Integration of Introverted and Extraverted Functions: The combination of introverted and extraverted functions in the primary and shadow functions aligns with Jungian theory and can help individuals explore the balance between internal processing (introverted functions) and external expression (extraverted functions).

4. Clarity in Function Dynamics:

The presence of repeated functions as a linkage mechanism can clarify the connections and transitions between primary and shadow functions. This structure can provide individuals with a clearer framework for understanding how cognitive functions operate and evolve within their personality type.

Do ambiverts exist?

The world is divided between left-handed and right-handed people, right? Well, like so many things in life, it’s not that simple. While most of us who can use both hands have a preference for one hand or the other, some adapt to a style of their own. For example, a left-handed kid who can’t find a left-handed baseball glove may have to learn to play right-handed to make the team. They’re still “left-handed,” but watching them play baseball you wouldn’t be able to tell.

A person who learns to use both hands more or less equally to do things is called ambidextrous—the Latin prefix “ambi” meaning both, and “dexterous” meaning skillful with the hands.

Two sides of the same coin

We hear the same thing often about personality. Some consider themselves an Extravert, while others feel distinctly like an Introvert. Well, what if someone cherishes their alone time once in a while, but too much solitude leaves them wanting to see people? Conversely, what if a day packed with productive meetings is great—even necessary—but after a lot of socializing, they need to draw the curtains and be alone with a book, a show, a hobby, or simply their own thoughts?

Ambiverts: Switch-hitters

Personality preferences such as Extraversion and Introversion are hardwired into our brains—just like being right- or left-handed. But being right-handed doesn't render your left hand useless.

In fact, many people practice using their non-dominant hand enough to become ambidextrous.

It takes a lot of practice, but it can make them more versatile at a great many things.

Similarly, whether someone prefers Extraversion or Introversion, they will inevitably learn a wide range of behaviors over the course of their lives that will help them function better in the world. These behaviors include both extraverted and introverted preferences, which are required—depending on the situation, and in varying degrees—to operate effectively as human beings.

Each pair of types consists of 8 cognitive functions. The first half represents the primary type, while the second half represents the shadow type. In each pair, two functions appear twice creating a bridge between the two types, and the other four functions in both halves are a mix of introverted and extraverted forms of the same functions.

Because of the sheer diversity of individuals across the world ,it’s important to remember that each person is unique and may not fit perfectly into any single type.

Given the immense variability among people globally, it’s certainly plausible to suggest that there could be even more nuanced variations and combinations of personality traits beyond the 16 personality types.
